Furl I & II

Antique Marble
70cm x 30cm x 35cm

About.

The work set out to present more architectural and monolithic forms.

The Process.

The works were studies directly from life at a 1:7 scale. The forms were scaled up by eye, using steel rods bent into shape to create a simplified yet expressive maquette from which to measure.

The Material.

The works are made from an antique marble block, purchased from the studio of the former sculptor Brian Taylor. The block had been squared up by hand using a punch, suggesting a real age to the block. The block was split in half using plug and feathers, which are a traditional method of splitting stone. Holes are drilled along the stone where you wish to split it, and steel wedges are driven into the holes, splitting the stone. The sculptures retain the original texture of the block, and the drill holes where the stone was split.
