The work plays with form, pattern and light. The translucency of the stone becomes evident when the light catches it, and the sculpture burst into light.
The Process.
The piece was carved by hand with hammer and chisel. To gain the full effects of the translucent material, the thickness of the stone had to be trimmed to just the right depth.
The Material.
Carved in Spanish alabaster. Alabaster is a very soft stone, allowing detail to be refined through scraping and filing, as opposed to the traditional hammer and chisel. Though soft the stone is also very dense and incredibly fine, and has been prized by sculptors for centuries for it ethereal qualities.
